This e-book collates information on watersheds and watershed management in the SAR in order to guide the planning and prioritization work of World Bank teams, clients, and development partners in the region. This e-book includes the following specific contents:

  • Background on watersheds as a spatial unit of analysis;
  • An overview of major watersheds in the South Asia Region;
  • Context on key development challenges related to water and watershed management in the South Asia Region across social, economic and environmental sectors;
  • Two deep dives into sediment management and landslide risk, including links to two online Guidance Tools that have been developed on the topics; and
  • A typology of potential solutions to address key development challenges, including the use of disruptive technologies.

The e-book also houses links to associated knowledge products developed through this activity.

Data and Knowledge Resources

Data and knowledge resources included as part of the e-book are the SAR Watersheds Knowledge Portal and the SAR Watersheds Data Portal. The Knowledge Portal compiles key literature, articles, videos and other substantive material relevant to watershed management in SAR. The Data Portal compiles key open access datasets relevant to watershed management in SAR. Both resources have been organized according to key economic sectors impacted by watershed-scale processes and interventions: disaster management; water supply; agriculture; hydropower; and transportation.

Deep Dives: Tools for Watershed Management

This e-book also links to online tools that have been developed for planning and prioritization around sediment management and landslide risk management in SAR. While these tools have been developed with a focus on SAR, they have broad applicability to many other regions that exhibit high erosion and sedimentation rates.
