About this Interactive E-book

Tired of big books and static PDFs? Explore this new interactive e-packaging of knowledge!

This interactive resource will introduce the concepts of modern hydroinformatics in an innovative manner with text interspersed with embedded animations, videos, interactive graphs/maps and other multi-media, interactive visualizations, and experiences. This will include numerous links to other resources and structured in a way that everyone can get a quick overview of all key aspects of HydroInformatics with the ability for users to undertake “deep dives” to explore areas of interest in greater depth. This responsive-design web browser-based resource can be accessed on any suitable digital device (e.g., smartphones, tablets, computers, touchscreens).

Interactive HydroInformatics Data & Analytics Catalog

What is the rainfall trend in the Sahel? What is the current level of Aswan? What is the watershed at this particular location on the Ganges? What do the recent set of climate change models indicate about the scenarios for the Amazon? How many people live in the Mekong Delta? Which areas are particularly vulnerable to Sea Level rise in South Asia? How much has the Aral Sea shrunk? Does the rain in Spain really stay mostly in the plains? …If these are the kinds of questions that keep you up, this is the resource for you!

This interactive data catalog will include links to a powerful range of resources that mostly provide global coverage of easily accessible public-domain data relevant for HydroInformatics (e.g., from in-situ data compilations or earth observation data products). It will also include an emerging set of free cloud analytics (e.g., accessing available online data services and leveraging Google Earth Engine and other online GIS (Geographical Information System) and cloud computational abilities).

As a result, analysis done in the cloud makes it easy for people to get their hands on the data and allows for quick analysis of a lot of data without the need for expensive computers or high-speed internet. Users can use a browser-based catalog that will also be responsive and accessible on any suitable digital device.

Interactive HydroInformatics Knowledge Portal

Is there a video to explain the basics of hydroinformatics? What are the key institutions working on providing free global data and knowledge? What is a relevant recent journal article on measuring water quality or groundwater use with innovative technologies?

This innovative resource will provide you with access to much of the relevant recent knowledge resources related to advances in HydroInformatics. Explore a range of reports, journal articles, media reports, videos, and websites for different regions of the world on a range of relevant topics in an engaging, interactive manner.

This e-book contains many examples of specific technologies and initiatives to support water management. This is not intended to be in any way an endorsement of these technologies but is intended to illustrate this fast-moving world of innovative technologies being leveraged to solve what used to be considered intractable challenges.

This e-book and associated resources have been developed by the World Bank Disruptive KIDS (Knowledge, Information & Data Services) Helpdesk in association with the World Bank Open Learning Campus, and the HydroInformatics community. The effort has been led by Nagaraja Rao Harshadeep (Harsh), Global Lead (Disruptive Technology) and the team especially Hrishikesh Patel, Isabel Ramos Tellez, Akash Mehta, Afua Oguah, Marcel Giovanni Prieto Castellanos, Aminul Islam, Yolande Munzimi, Shaffiq Somani, Nfamara Dampha, and Hak Joo Song. Andrea Juarez Lucas (Water Resources Management Specialist) and Sanjay Pahuja (Lead Water Resources Management Specialist) have provided significant technical inputs into the e-book. Sheila Jagannathan (Head, Open Learning Campus) has led the activities on the Knowledge Learning event on “Disrupting” HydroInformatics and integration of these interactive products into the learning.
